The Science of Red and NIR LED PBM 


Red and NIR light PBM are becoming progressively popular in the spa, wellness and beauty realms.

  • Red light is visible and is most effective for use on the surface of the skin. Red light occupies the “long end” of the visible spectrum with wavelengths of 630nm-700nm.
  • NIR light is invisible and effective for use on the surface of the skin as well as within the body around 2 inches from the skin. Spectrum of NIR light for PBM varies from 800nm up to around 1,100nm.

The wavelength of NIR light is longer than the wavelength of red light, which allows NIR light to penetrate more deeply into the body. Thus, the application of red light and NIR light combined generates better PBM effects in general.

NIR light is invisible but penetrates deeper into the body, which helps many cells located deep in the body absorb light energy for PBM. The NIR light absorbed by the cells deep in the body help cells to be modulated in a beneficial way.
