STEP 1 Stimulate Cytochrome C Oxidase

The primary target for PBM process is the Cytochrome C Oxidase (CCO), an enzyme which is found in the inner membrane of the cell mitochondria when light is irradiated on the cells. CCO is a vital component of the electron transport chain that drives cellular metabolism called “cell respiration.”


STEP 2 Increase Production of ATP (Energy)

As light is absorbed by CCO, it stimulates the electron transport chain to increase the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) within the mitochondria. When tissue is damaged, the production of ATP in the cell is impaired which slows down the metabolism of the cell as a protective mechanism. PBM helps restore the oxidative process which helps restore normal cellular function.


STEP 3 Increase NO and ROS Activity

In addition to ATP, red and NIR light stimulation also helps dissociate nitric oxide from CCO and modulates reactive oxygen species (ROS). Nitric oxide is a powerful vasodilator and an important cellular signaling molecule involved in many physiological processes. ROS have been shown to affect many important physiological signaling pathways including the inflammatory response. Together, increased NO and improved ROS levels provide an environment for faster signaling, resulting in the reduction of inflammation.



What are the benefits of Red and NIR LED PBM?


Electromagnetic wave starts with safe waves such as radio, microwave, infrared leading to visible light spectrum.

Hazardous waves such as x-rays and gamma rays are located at the other end.

 

The human eye can see wavelengths that range from 400 - 700 nanometers (don’t worry, we’ll explain). The human body can feel parts of the electromagnetic spectrum that cannot be seen, such as far infrared light as heat!

The Science of Photo-bio-modulation (PBM)


For ideal health, all humans require regular exposure to light! A great example is Vitamin D which comes from sunlight. The sun’s rays include the more commonly known ultraviolet light (UV), but more than half of its output is infrared. When it comes to visible light, violet colored light contains the highest energy and red colored light the lowest energy from the visible light.

As mentioned above, this spectrum classifies each form of energy by nanometers and its effect on the human physique. Nanometers are a unit of length equivalent to a billionth of a meter, and they are used to measure the wavelength of light. Since we’re comparing red light to NIR light, it’s important to note their order on the spectrum.


  • Red light is visible and is most effective for use on the surface of the skin. Red light occupies the “long end” of the visible spectrum with wavelengths of 630nm-700nm.
  • NIR light is invisible and is effective for use on the surface of the skin as well as penetration of around 2 inches into the body. NIR light sits right next to red light on the electromagnetic spectrum at 800nm to 1000 nm.


The wavelength of NIR light is longer than the wavelength of red light, which allows NIR light to penetrate more deeply into the body. Thus, NIR light provides some similar, but somewhat different benefits than red light. The science behind these concepts has been around for centuries.
